GBA Training map

Post  DucTape on Tue Aug 03, 2010 6:29 am

I've started mapping, and would like to attempt a training map for GBA. Suggest features that would help our training so that I an add them to the list. Once I have a good idea what we want, I'll start the map.

Map Features:
  • Multiple base areas (building)
  • Large open rooms and hallways (teach different strategies for each)
  • Vent systems (how to own in vents)
  • Obstacle course (Jumping, ducking, sprinting, etc...)
  • Some area with hurt pads on walls (Wall-climbing dexterity)
  • Open outside-ish area (Jettards, and removal thereof)
  • ...
  • At least one crazy gimmick (it's a secret)

Will add more features as I get them.

The areas will be divided so that one in one, the game is confined to that area. To completely enter an area you must press a button, destroying the original base. Players can then teleport to the base areas. I will find a way to ensure both teams go to the same place. (Maybe humans pick every time?) There will be a way to get back to the original bases to choose another area if bth teams agree. (opens is a structure from both teams is put on a platform.

How far did you get? I had some trouble too. Took me an hour to learn how to select and de-select. (Select is shift+click, de is esc) It's confusing, but not that hard once you get it. I'm not a great mapper yet, like I'm not experienced with hint brushes and the like, but I can make playable maps.

P.S. I use netradiant, but basically the same thing.

Well, i made a simply box map already. But that's all. I had much trouble with the placement of the walls and the ceiling. I decided to stop mapping as i failed several times to place a hallway between two rooms.

That was pretty confusing for me too. I just build a hallway, with a wall between the rooms, and then cut it into smaller pieces (with clipper tool), and delete the ones I don't want.

If your not sure how to map, a good way to figure it out is you-tube.

That's how I learned wtf was going on.
Personally I've always tried to make maps, I've just been so confused about how to make the .map file a .pk3 file....

If you run into any more trouble, post it. I'll try to help best I can! Smile

It might be a while. I have to make several training "worlds" and a way to seal off all but the one that's being played in. I already have (most of) the central base, and the start of the hallway zone done.

And about the pk3, just put your .bsp in a folder called "maps", make a zip with the map name, and save. Rename the .zip to .pk3.

While away i took the liberty of finding out...
Net-radiant is a branch off of GtkRadiant1.5 since the people who made the gtk are no longer in business.

And yes, net radiant is much better, they last updated 2010, which i was very happy about.
Site to download net-radiant: http://www.icculus.org/netradiant/files/
Hope this helps.

We could send files back and forth or something. Like I would make a part, one of the seven (I might add more) areas, zip all the files, send it to you, and you do the same. The hardest part is probably going to be making sure everyone on both teams always go to the same place, I would appreciate some help working that out.
