Operating System talk Empty Operating System talk

I wanted to continue my Ubuntu talk with Glame from a topic in General, without spamming up the board, so here we go. What OS do you use and why?

I personally use Kubuntu, Ubuntu with KDE in place of Gnome.
  • Virus proof
  • Package manager
  • Free (Speech and beer)
  • Speed

(I'll add more when I'm not tired)

Kubuntu is far from virus proof, there are many virus's for all linux distros. No operating system is virus proof, but linux and max both being Unix are close to it.

I use Mac OSX. Never gotten a virus, ever. Also there is close to none crapware for Mac, along with a high amount of open source software.

Also Coda > any other text editor, you all just have to be jealous.

Ok, NEARLY virus proof. Only a few viruses have been written for Linux, and most have been contained in the lab and patched.

Check out puppy linux, I just switched and it uses the same repo as ubuntu and can install .deb files.

Ubuntu seems laggy compared to puppy.

I've used it a little, more of a portable system than anything else. And my system is plenty powerful, if I was that concerned with speed I wouldn't be running KDE.

Few viruses that go unpatched for a few days.

I should point out "few" is relative.
Windows has had over 1 million viruses (of course many are currently ineffective), Linux has only had under 1000 (many of which are also ineffective).

I'm perfectly fine, as far as viruses go, because I have free antivirus software.

Also false.

I must point out to you that while Linux is open source and free and community driven and what not, its not perfect. There are still major flaws with every version of nix. Mostly because its not being driven by people hurrying things along because there is a company to run.

Most of my windows boxes have become useless within 6 months, while my *nix boxes have always stayed at the same speed.

If a user does not go clicking on every executable package on a *nix system, things will stay fine, like in OSX.

OSX is heavily based on BSD, which can be haxed just like any other system out there.

the trick is to find an OS that has the right balance of security features and usability.

on a side noite:

Puppy linux is a portable system and it's very prone to fucking itself in the ass when the power goes out on a HDD install.

I'll prolly be moving it to a flash drive.

Flaws, yes, viruses, no. It might rash on you, depending on what kind of distro you use, but there are still very few viruses. The last estimate I saw was 800 something.

Flaws yes, viruses yes. Get off of your high horse. You don't conform to the community and installed Linux. Good job. Congradufuckinglations.

I will not have you try to feed me some sort of operating system basted nationality of propaganda about any nix. There are 800 known that they haven't fix the flaws to end. There are countless thousands, if not more, that the community as a hole does not know about.

I wouldn't saw thousands, but I'm sure there are quite a few floating around, haunting miscellaneous repositories and storing themselves in third party deb packages, just relativity few compared to Windows, which I'm sure also has more than we all know about.
